Twitter had a tough year in 2014, but they hope to raise their popularity with a new partnership with Google. On Thursday Twitter is expected to announce they will be going into business with Google, allowing tweets to be searched on the world’s most popular search engine.
The deal, according to the New York Times, will give Google direct access to the hundreds of millions of tweets that come from Twitter every day, and make it possible for tweets to quickly appear in Google search results.
This plan was already discussed in 2009 but the two companies could not come to a financial agreement and ceased all movement by 2011.
However, with Twitter falling on hard times it seems like a necessary move. Investors fear that Twitter will not be able to attract constant new users as rapidly as other social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. Facebook alone has almost five times as many as Twitter’s 284 million monthly users.
Even though they have less users, Twitter argues their company still sees a lot of movement. Tweets are embedded on media websites constantly, that includes non-social media websites as well. Dick Costolo, Twitter’s chief executive, is likely to point to the new agreement as another example of Twitter’s true reach.
Twitter reports fourth-quarter earnings after the close of trading on Thursday. The deal with Google is still in progress and there will be many details to follow in the near future.
