NJ Gov. Chris Christie took a hard line against President Obama and the Democrats for trying to increase the minimum wage at every available opportunity, and using the issue as a main campaign point for the midterm elections.
Speaking at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s annual Legal Reform Summit in Washington D.C. on Tuesday, Christie told the audience that he’s ‘tired’ of all this minimum wage talk.
“I have to tell you the truth,” Christie said. “I’m tired of hearing about the minimum wage. I really am. I don’t think there’s a mother or father sitting around a kitchen table tonight saying ‘you know honey, if our son or daughter could just make a higher minimum wage, my god – all our dreams would be realized.”
Christie was seen as a top presidential contender in the 2106 elections until the GW Bridge issue decreased his lead, although he’s still leading the pack for electability in Iowa.
Continuing his speech, Christie said that we should teach our children to have greater aspirations.
“Is that what parents aspire to for our children? They aspire to a greater growing America where their children have the ability to make much more money and have much greater success than they had,” Christie said. “And that’s not about a higher minimum wage, everybody. So we should start talking about what our aspirations are and how they can be achieved rather than the president playing to the lowest common denominator on a higher minimum wage.”
Christie added that if the GOP wants a Republican president in 2016, they need to elect Republican governors in the upcoming midterm elections. “I am convinced the next president of the United States is going to be a governor,” Gov. Christie said.
